You’re just in time to witness one of the most iconic events in Pokémon Go’s history: GO Fest 2025: Max Finale Event! Eternatus, the legendary Pokémon, is the highlight of this event. So, in this article, from how to get Eternatus in Pokémon Go and how good is Eternatus to Eternatus type and what is Eternatus weak to, we cover everything you need to know! But first, let’s start with the currently most asked question by trainers, “When is Eternatus coming to Pokémon Go?”.

How to Get Eternatus in Pokémon GO

Part 1: When is Eternatus Coming to Pokémon Go?

Pokémon GO Fest 2025: Max Finale brings Eternatus to the game for the first time! This special event runs from August 23, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. to August 24, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. local time.

It all starts with the Dark Skies prelude, which runs from August 18 to August 23, and features all Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémons released to date in Max Battles at Power Spots. During the Dark Skies prelude, Trainers level 13 and above will also begin progressing through the free GO Pass: Max Finale to earn an encounter with Eternatus, even before the weekend.

And on the weekend, Eternamax Eternatus (an alternate, more powerful form of Eternatus) will appear in Max Battles at Power Spots. However, you won’t be able to catch it. Instead, beating it will reward you with lots of Eternatus Candy and Candy XL, which you’ll need to power up your regular Eternatus.

But is Eternatus good enough to be worth the upgrade? Let’s see it in our next section on how good is Eternatus in Pokémon Go!

Part 2: How Good is Eternatus in Pokémon Go

Eternatus Type and Stats

Eternatus' type is dual Poison and Dragon. It has a very high maximum CP of 5007, which makes it very strong in battles. The base Eternatus stats are also very strong, which gives rise to some of the Eternatus’ best moveset:

  • Attack: 278
  • Defense: 192
  • Stamina: 268

Eternatus Best Moveset

Poison Jab (fast move) and Dynamax Cannon (charge move) are Eternatus’ best moveset. This combination not only has top DPS but also high TDO.

However, some players also use Dragon Tail + Dragon Pulse, which is especially useful in PvP. And this brings us to our next question: “How useful is Eternatus in PvE and PvP?”

How Useful is Eternatus in PvE & PvP?

Eternatus is one of the best Dragon-type attackers in PvE, nearly rivalling Mega Rayquaza when boosted by Party Power. In PvP (like Go Battle League), it performs well but needs proper team support because it lacks a very fast (0.5s) charge move.

So… Is Eternatus Worth Powering Up?

Is Eternatus Worth Powering Up? Candy & XL Candy Cost

Seeing that Eternatus requires 15,896 regular candy and 4,988 XL candy to fully power up, it really makes one wonder, “Is Eternatus good enough to be worth the upgrade?”

The answer depends on your gameplay goals. In PvE, Eternatus excels as a powerful Poison-type attacker, especially with charged moves like Sludge Bomb. Its high HP and Attack make it effective in raids, particularly against Fairy- and Grass-types.

In PvP, however, it sees limited use due to a predictable moveset and weaknesses to Ice and Dragon. Unless you're building a themed team, stronger PvP options exist.

For collectors, maxing Eternatus is rewarding—but with its steep candy cost, it’s worth investing only if you value its raid performance.

Part 3: Can Eternatus be Shiny or Evolve? How BIG Is It

Wondering, “Can you get a Shiny Eternatus?”

Sadly, Shiny Eternatus is not available in Pokémon Go, at least not during GO Fest 2025. It might arrive at a future event, though. Also, there is no Eternatus evolution. It has a battle-only form called Eternamax Eternatus, but it’s not catchable in Pokémon GO.

Now, for those asking, “How big is Eternatus?”

In its base form, it’s 65 feet (20.0 m) tall. And Eternamax Eternatus? A towering 328 feet (100 m), which makes him the largest Pokémon ever! With that said, let us now see how to get Eternatus in Pokémon Go.

Part 4: How to Get Eternatus in GO Fest Max Battles

As mentioned earlier, Eternatus boasts a max CP of over 5000, making it one of the highest-CP Pokémon currently available in Pokémon GO. While many Trainers rely on 3000 CP Pokémon GO coordinates to find strong wild Pokémon, Eternatus can’t be obtained this way. As a special Dragon/Poison-type Legendary, it is exclusively available through the GO Fest 2025: Max Finale event—not through wild encounters or regular raids. To get Eternatus, you’ll need to follow the event’s special path. Below are the 5 key steps to unlock and catch Eternatus.

1Get the Free or Deluxe GO Pass

Starting August 18, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. local time, you’ll automatically be given a Free GO Pass: Max Finale to participate in the event and catch Eternatus, provided your trainer level is 13 or above. You can also get a GO Pass Deluxe: Max Finale, here’s how:

  • Visit the Pokémon GO Web Store
  • Log in with your Pokémon GO account
  • Select the GO Pass Deluxe: Max Finale
  • Complete the purchase and enjoy bonus rewards

2Encounter Eternatus via GO Pass Tasks

Once your GO Pass is active, whether Free or Deluxe, immediately begin completing GO Pass Tasks to earn GO Points. As you rank up and unlock rewards, one of them will be a guaranteed encounter with Eternatus.

3Catch Eternatus (One-Time Only)

Once you encounter Eternatus, give your best shot to catch it because you only get one guaranteed chance to catch it during the event, and it will not be available afterwards.

4Defeat Eternamax Eternatus for Candy

Because Eternatus requires tons of candy to evolve, you must participate in Max Battles from August 23 to August 24 and battle Eternamax Eternatus. Defeating it will give you large amounts of Eternatus Candy.

5[Deluxe Only] Enjoy Bonus Shiny Rates and Extra Rewards

Even though both Free and Deluxe Go Passes give a guaranteed encounter with Eternatus, the Deluxe Pass comes with some additional bonuses, such as:

  • Faster progression
  • Extra Candy & encounters
  • Increased shiny rates for select Pokémons
  • Exclusive avatar items like the Eternatus Helmet

Part 5: Eternamax Eternatus Weakness and Best Counters

Eternamax Eternatus Weakness

If you’re wondering what type is good against Eternatus, then look at its Poison and Dragon typing, which makes it vulnerable to Ground, Psychic, Ice, and Dragon moves, taking 60% more damage.

Top 5 Eternatus Counters to Defeat Eternamax Eternatus

Here are the best Pokémon to use against Eternamax Eternatus in Pokémon Go Raids:

  • Mega Rayquaza (Dragon Tail + Breaking Swipe)
Best overall Eternatus counter with Dragon-type advantage.
  • Shadow Mewtwo (Psycho Cut + Psystrike)

  • Primal Groudon (Mud Shot + Precipice Blades)
Powerful Ground-type that hits Eternatus hard.
  • Black Kyurem (Dragon Tail + Freeze Shock)
Dual Dragon/Ice type hits super effectively.

Bonus Tip: How to Defeat Eternamax Eternatus Without Visiting a Power Spot

Now that you know Eternatus’ weakness and best Eternatus counters, here’s the thing. You technically get 32 hours to battle Eternamax Eternatus during the Max Finale event, but… after taking out 8 hours of a good night’s sleep and 8 hours of daily work, you're barely left with less than 16 hours to play.
